Discover: Lavender in Hartville

After a recent lunch at Maize Valley Farmer Bill gave Erin & I a tour of their new lavender patch.

They started this growing season with three varieties of English lavender, a type that is accustomed to Ohio climates. And while this has been a tough year for farming, the lavender fields have managed to escape the flooding.

The field is open daily (Mon-Sat) from 1-3pm for U-Cut Lavender. Enjoy a relaxing trip to the hilltop where you’ll fill a tube with your harvest. The $10 fee gets you about 100-150 stems along with a voucher for buy one get one half off a lunch purchase. (I’m currently a little addicted to their Tuscan Chicken sandwich). You can even finish your meal with a lavender ice cream treat!

The adults that participate in the Wings program at Pegasus Farm started lavender in the hoop house this spring and are hoping to get it into the ground soon. Take a walk in the wellness garden and take home some lavender lemon loose leaf tea from their market.

Best Bib and Tucker

In addition to being an awesome women’s consignment shop (little bias – it’s my shop!), Best Bib and Tucker houses a handmade market. Four of their ridiculously talented artists use lavender in their creations. You’ll find candles, lip balm, bath bombs, and hot/cold rice packs all scented with lavender essential oil. They also feature jewelry from My Beverly Jewelry. These Youngstown based ladies grow and press lavender to create lovely necklaces.

Modern Vintage

Ellie makes exquisite small batch, cold process soaps. The lavender essential oil used in her bars is steam distilled from flowers raised in France. She says “lavender essential oil has natural soothing, healing, and balancing properties and is one of the most versatile and highly prized essential oils for skin care”. She also incorporates lavender in a shea butter cream. Check out her full Frog Goes to Market line at Modern Vintage.
